Creative Writing Program doctoral student Holly Haworth is among the winners of the prestigious 2023 Robert B. Silvers Foundation grant for her book-in-progress. The Robert B. Silvers Foundation is a charitable trust established at the bequest of the late Robert B. Silvers, a founding editor of The New York Review of Books, with the aim of supporting writers in the fields of long-form literary and art criticism, the intellectual essay, political analysis, and social reportage.
Haworth's book, This Resounding World: A Field Guide to Listening, forthcoming from Bloomsbury, is a work of lyrical environmental nonfiction that explores how we can better listen in this time of crisis and the unfolding sixth mass extinction.
"There is much work yet to go, and this helps me carve the space for my book and bring it forth," Haworth said. "I am grateful to Robert Silvers, who left a legacy of support that has touched my life and my work."
Haworth's essays, reporting, and poetry appear in The New York Times Magazine, Orion magazine, Oxford American, Terrain.org, The Utne Reader, Virginia Quarterly Review, Lapham's Quarterly and at the On Being radio program blog, among other places. Her work has received several Pushcart Prize nominations. It has been listed as notable in The Best American Travel Writing and included in The Best American Science and Nature Writing.
