Two UGA doctoral students win international Geology Award

Two Franklin College doctoral students won the Farouk El Baz Student Research Award from the Geological Society of America. The primary role of the GSA research grants program is to provide partial support of master's and doctoral thesis research in the geological sciences for graduate students enrolled in universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America. The highly regarded Farouk El Baz Award for desert research is only given to two students per year worldwide.

Doctoral candidate Lea Davidson won for her research project, "Improving Transmission Loss Estimates for Aquifer Recharge: Analysis of Post-flood Sediment Drying in Intermittent River Channels" and doctoral candidate Yonesha Donaldson for her research, "A geophysical approach to understand flow and morphology of an inland freshwater lens in the arid southwest, US"

"This is very exciting to have Yannie and Lea recognized for their work and it is certainly well deserved by both," said Adam Milewski, professor and head of the department of geology.  "This is a very prestigious award that receives applicants worldwide and only awards two per year, so to have two awardees from UGA within Franklin College and the department of geology speaks highly about the outstanding research we are doing here."
