Dean's intro video scored by Hodgson School of Music student

Our new video introducing Dean Anna Stenport features a score composed and produced by Jacob Evarts, a media composition major in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. The music helps create an elevated tone for the video and is another example of innovative experiential learning opportunities in the Franklin College.

"Jacob already had a piece performed by the Orlando Symphony in 2022, called "Wonder of the World" as part of a program called "The National Young Composers Challenge"," said Tom Hiel, assistant professor of Commercial Music & Media and Director of the Film and Media Scoring Certificates in the Hodgson School.  "I gave him direction on what I thought the video and music would be and the length, and Jacob composed and produced this wonderful track."

The Film and Media Scoring program is quite new at UGA, with the scoring Certificates online as of Spring 2022. But the program is growing fast with 25 students signed up, and mixers every semester with the Entertainment and Media Studies students who are all creating films, giving our students real world opportunities to collaborate right here on campus. "With filming and production being a $4.4 Billion industry in the state last year, I'm confident these collaborations will continue on," Hiel said.

Heil's background in film scoring started over 30 years ago, with credits including "Swimming With Sharks" (Kevin Spacey, Lionsgate), "The Practice" TV Show (Dylan McDermott, ABC), A Plumm Summer (Henry Winkler, Paramount), and collaborations with composers Marco Beltrami, and Mark Mothersbaugh on "Redeye" (Cillian Murphy, Dreamworks), "Angel Eyes" (Jennifer Lopez, Universal), "Rugrats Go to Paris" (Paramount), "Rugrats Go Wild" (Paramount), composing additional music and orchestrating.

"Having such real world experience, both on large studio films to independents, and network television, helps our students here at UGA learn the craft in a much more meaningful way," Hiel said. "Together with talents such a Jacob's, we can guide the next generation of Film, Television, and Game Composers here at UGA. The Feedback on Jacob's work for the video has been tremendous with positive comments coming in from the Industry professionals I've shared it with!"
