Poet and visual artist Will Alexander to visit UGA

Poet, novelist, visual artist, philosopher, essayist, and pianist Will Alexander visitis UGA and will present a public reading of his creative work on Thursday, January 18 at 7 p.m. at Ciné:

Alexander was born in Los Angeles and received a B.A. from the University of California–Los Angeles. Alexander published his first poetry collection, Vertical Rainbow Climber (Jazz Press), in 1987. He went on to publish numerous books of poetry, including Kaleidoscopic Omniscience (Skylight Press, 2013), The Sri Lankan Loxodrome (New Directions, 2009), and Asia & Haiti (Sun & Moon Press, 2000).

“Will Alexander has emerged as one of the great original spirits in American poetry of the past fifty years. His tutelary spirit offers a glimpse of poetry as visionary spark flying hot from the forge of ancestral inspirations. His is a poetry that roams far above and beyond the local, attuned with regions only NASA is attuned to,” Rasula said.

Alexander is the recipient of a California Arts Council Fellowship, a PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles Award, and a Whiting Fellowship, among many others. Also known for his essays and nonfiction, he is the author of Singing in Magnetic Hoofbeat: Essays, Prose Texts, Interviews, and a Lecture 1991–2007 (Essay Press, 2013), winner of an American Book Award.

Alexander’s visit is made possible with support from the Willson Center for Humanities and Art, Ideas for Creative Exploration, the Helen S. Lanier Foundational Fund at UGA, and the Creative Writing Program.

Alexander's scheduled events at the Dodd yesterday were interrupted by the snow. The community has a great opportunity to hear from and interact with him tonight at Ciné. Welcome to campus, Mr. Alexander.
