UGA alumnus John Powers, (MFA in sculpture, 2008) was awarded the Virginia A Groot Foundation Award, which includes $35,000 in support for a sculpture artist.

Powers lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama where he is Assistant Professor of Sculpture at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. John is the recipient of a prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant as well as the 2008 Southeastern College Art Conference Individual Artist Fellowship. His sculptures, installations, animation and video works have been exhibited internationally.

Via email, Powers says,"The award was given for my large scale sculptures and installations which often include the passage of time as a driving conceptual element addressed via the the use of light, sound, and motion. I am looking to further explore the relationship to technology in the work, particularly the incorporation of digital technologies in both the production and composition of my kinetic sculptures. It is incredibly exciting and humbling to have received this award."

Fantastic news. Congratulations to Powers and continued success. For more on Power's work, visit here.
